The Prologue of the 2011 Dakar, Tim Coronel in his buggy

Dakar 2011 is to start today in Buenos Aires, passing the obelisk at Avenue – 9 July. A total of 377 linking kilometres will bring the racers to Victoria. This stage is not timed and no points are to earn for this day. The crews can enjoy the encouragement of the crowd cheering at the road sides. According to the organisation, the Dakar is important for the for the image of Argentina as the world can have a better access to the culture, traditions and population of the country. Last year, about 4 million people were watching the event. However, safety is a concern for the organisation as the people apparently want to watch the Dakar rally too closely.

This is an easy starting point for the rally which is starting on 1 January 2011 in Buenos Aires to make its round through South America. At this very moments, the teams are arriving and making the first preparations to their trucks, cars and buggies which will be racing in the first weeks of the year.

The GINAF of Dakar Team Holland

The preparations for the Dakar rally in South America, starting from Buenos Aires, Brazil, are taking off.

Dakar Team Holland made the presentation of their team last Friday and is preparing the GINAF truck to be shipped. This will take more than a month, after equipment has been built in the lorry and being tested by the organisers. Dakar Team Holland is starting with number 530. Earlier, they were having a trial stage, of which an image is on this page.

The team has a longer history with a smaller car. The truck will be driven by Marcel Schoo and the navigator is Michel van Herpen. They are competing in the Specials class, which means they are allowed to have alterations in the techniques.
